Turkey e-Visa: when you are asked for a flight itinerary
Istanbul is one of the busiest destinations for travellers who have not yet bought their ticket. Depending on your nationality you may need an e-Visa or a consular visa, and in both cases you can be asked to show a flight itinerary — at the application stage, at check-in, or on arrival.
What is usually required
Turkey issues e-Visas online to many nationalities and requires a consular visa from others. Which applies to you, and what supporting documents are needed, depends on your passport and the purpose of your trip.
A flight itinerary can be asked for in three situations:
- With a consular visa application. Consulates commonly ask for a travel plan showing entry and exit dates, and many advise against buying a ticket before the visa is granted.
- At airline check-in. Agents may ask to see how you intend to leave Turkey, especially on a one-way booking.
- On arrival. An officer may ask about your plans and return date.
Check the official Turkish e-Visa site and your nearest consulate for what applies to your nationality, and ask your airline what it will check.
How a ValidFlight reservation helps

The honest limits:
- A reservation is not a ticket and has no e-ticket number. If an agent or an officer insists on a paid ticket, it may not satisfy them.
- The airline holds an unpaid booking only for a limited time, typically 48 to 72 hours, and then releases it.
- Departures must be at least 10 days away. We cannot create a reservation for a flight sooner than that.
- We cannot predict how an individual agent or officer will decide. Meeting the entry requirements remains your responsibility.
If you need certainty, a refundable or changeable ticket bought from the airline is the safer option.
Timing
- Standard reservation: order it so it is live on the day it will be checked. If that day is further off, tell us the date and we create it the evening before.
- 7-day or 14-day plan: for a processing window whose exact day you do not know. We create a fresh booking each time the previous one is released and e-mail you the new PNR — always use the latest one.
- Keep the PDF offline on your phone and bring a printed copy.
What it is not
A ValidFlight reservation is not a flight ticket. It is unpaid, has no e-ticket number and cannot be used to board any flight. It is not a way around entry rules and must never be presented as a paid ticket. If you are asked directly whether you hold a ticket, answer truthfully. To actually travel to Turkey you need a real ticket.
Do I need a return ticket for a Turkey e-Visa?
The e-Visa application itself is done online and does not always require an itinerary, but airlines and officers may ask to see how you will leave. What applies depends on your nationality.
Does the consulate accept a reservation instead of a ticket?
Many consulates accept an itinerary with a booking reference and explicitly advise not to buy a ticket before the visa is decided. Requirements differ by consulate, so check the one handling your application.
How long is the reservation valid?
The airline holds an unpaid booking for roughly 48 to 72 hours, then releases it. Time it to the day it will be checked, or use the 7-day or 14-day plan for a longer processing window.
Can I use it to fly to or from Turkey?
No. It is not a ticket, has no e-ticket number and cannot be used to board.
What if my visa is refused?
Nothing is owed to the airline, because the reservation was never paid. You simply do not use it and it is released.
