Flight reservation and onward ticket for the Dominican Republic

Two different groups of travellers need this document in the Dominican Republic: residents applying for a visa at a consulate in Santo Domingo, and visitors arriving in Punta Cana or Santo Domingo on a one-way ticket. The requirement sounds the same in both cases — show a flight out — but who checks it, and when, is not the same at all. This guide covers both.

What is usually required

If you are applying for a visa — Schengen consulates in Santo Domingo, and most others, ask for a travel itinerary showing your intended dates of entry and exit. They generally do not want you to have bought a ticket before the decision, because a refusal would leave you out of pocket. An itinerary with a booking reference, passenger name and dates is normally what is meant.

If you are travelling to the Dominican Republic, an airline may ask at check-in for evidence that you will leave within the permitted stay, and immigration may ask on arrival. Airline checks are the more common of the two, because carriers can be made responsible for passengers who are refused entry.

Rules change and depend on your nationality. Check the current requirements published by the consulate you are applying to, or by the Dominican authorities, and ask your airline what it will check for your route.

How a ValidFlight reservation helps

We place an unticketed reservation with an airline in your name — a flight out of the Dominican Republic, or the outbound and return legs your application needs. You receive the booking reference (PNR), the flight details and a PDF itinerary by e-mail. Airlines differ in what they publish online: many do not show a reservation in their “Manage booking” tool until a ticket is issued, so the reference may return nothing there. That does not mean the reservation is missing — it is held in the airline's own system, and the PDF itinerary is the document to present. Prices start from €10.90.

Routes our customers book most often from here are Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Punta Cana (PUJ) to Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Vilnius for European applications, and to Panama City, Guatemala City or São Paulo for regional travel.

The limits matter as much as the uses:

What it is not

A reservation is not a flight ticket. It is unpaid, has no e-ticket number and cannot be used to board. It is not a visa and does not extend a permitted stay, and it should never be described as a paid ticket to a consular officer or an airline. When you actually travel, you will need to buy a real ticket.

Do I need proof of onward travel to enter the Dominican Republic?

Airlines commonly ask for evidence of onward or return travel before boarding, and immigration may ask on arrival. The requirement depends on your nationality and length of stay, so check the current official rules and ask your airline what it will check for your route.

Will a Schengen consulate in Santo Domingo accept a reservation instead of a ticket?

Consulates generally ask for an itinerary rather than a purchased ticket, and many state that buying a ticket before a decision is not advisable. Requirements differ between consulates, so read the checklist for the country you are applying to.

How long is the reservation valid?

Typically 24 to 72 hours, depending on the airline. The 7-day and 14-day plans renew it automatically and e-mail you a new booking reference each time.

Can I use it to fly out of the Dominican Republic?

No. It is not a ticket and cannot be used to board. Buy a ticket for the flight you actually take.

What if my visa appointment is moved?

Write to us before the reservation expires and tell us the new date. A reservation the airline has already released cannot be changed — a new one has to be created.
