Onward ticket for Indonesia and Bali

Indonesia is one of the countries where proof of onward travel is checked in practice, not just written in the rules — and it is usually the airline that checks it, at the departure gate, before you ever reach Indonesian immigration. Travellers heading to Bali on an open-ended trip run into this constantly. This guide covers who asks, what an unticketed reservation does, and where it falls short.

What is usually required

Visitors arriving visa-free or on a visa on arrival are generally expected to hold a ticket out of Indonesia within the permitted stay. In practice this is enforced in two places:

Visa-on-arrival eligibility, permitted stay and extension rules have changed more than once in recent years. Check the current information from Indonesian immigration or an Indonesian embassy, and ask your airline what it will check for your nationality and route.

How a ValidFlight reservation helps

We place an unticketed reservation with an airline in your name for a flight out of Indonesia — typically to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok or another nearby hub — and send you the booking reference (PNR), flight details and a PDF itinerary by e-mail. Airlines differ in what they publish online: many do not show a reservation in their “Manage booking” tool until a ticket is issued, so the reference may return nothing there. That does not mean the reservation is missing — it is held in the airline's own system, and the PDF itinerary is the document to present. Prices start from €10.90.

Routes our customers book most often are Denpasar (DPS) to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Da Nang and Tokyo, and Jakarta (CGK) to Cebu and London.

Be clear-eyed about the limits, because Indonesia is a route where they bite:

If you need certainty — for instance if you have been refused boarding before — buy a refundable or changeable onward ticket instead.

Timing tips

What it is not

A reservation is not a flight ticket. It is unpaid, has no e-ticket number and cannot be used to board. It does not extend your permitted stay, it is not a visa, and it should not be described as a paid ticket to an airline or an officer. To leave Indonesia you will need to buy a real ticket or other transport.

Do I need an onward ticket to enter Indonesia or Bali?

Visitors arriving visa-free or on a visa on arrival are generally expected to hold onward travel out of Indonesia within the permitted stay, and airlines commonly check this before boarding. Rules change, so check current official information and ask your airline.

Will the airline accept a reservation at check-in?

It depends on the airline and the agent. Some accept an itinerary with a booking reference, while others ask for an e-ticket number, which a reservation does not have. Ask your airline in advance if you can.

Can I show a ferry or bus ticket out of Indonesia instead?

Some travellers leave by sea to Malaysia or Singapore, but whether an airline or immigration officer accepts that as proof is up to them. Check with your airline before you fly.

How long is the reservation valid?

Typically 24 to 72 hours, depending on the airline. The 7-day and 14-day plans renew it automatically and e-mail you a new booking reference each time.

Can I actually fly out of Bali on the reservation?

No. It is not a ticket and cannot be used to board. Buy a ticket for the flight you actually take.
