Return tickets for Latin America: who asks, and what counts

Travellers flying into Latin America on a one-way ticket are regularly asked to show how they intend to leave. The request usually comes from the airline at check-in rather than from immigration, and it catches people out because nothing on the ticket warns them. This guide explains why it happens and what an unticketed reservation can do about it.

Why airlines check

Under international rules an airline that carries a passenger who is then refused entry has to fly them back and pay a fine. That cost is the reason check-in agents ask about your onward travel, sometimes more insistently than the destination country itself would.

Travellers most often report being asked when flying to:

Requirements differ by nationality and change over time. Check the official sources for the country you are entering and ask your airline what it will check for your route; carriers rely on IATA Timatic, and their customer service can tell you what it shows.

How a ValidFlight reservation helps

ValidFlight places an unticketed reservation with an airline in your name, on the route and date you choose. You receive the booking reference (PNR), the flight details and a printable PDF itinerary by e-mail, usually within minutes. While it is held, the booking can be looked up on the airline's own website under "Manage booking". Prices start from €10.90.

The honest limits:

If you need certainty, a refundable or changeable ticket bought from the airline is the safer option.

Timing

What it is not

A ValidFlight reservation is not a flight ticket. It is unpaid, has no e-ticket number and cannot be used to board any flight. It is not a way around entry rules and must never be presented as a paid ticket. If you are asked directly whether you hold a ticket, answer truthfully. To actually travel to the country you are visiting you need a real ticket.

Which Latin American countries require a return ticket?

Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica commonly ask visitors for a return or onward ticket, and airlines may ask on other routes too. What applies depends on your nationality, so check official sources before you fly.

Does immigration or the airline check it?

Usually the airline, at check-in in your departure country, because it bears the cost if you are refused entry. Immigration may also ask on arrival.

Will an unticketed reservation satisfy them?

Often, because it carries a real booking reference the airline can look up. But some agents insist on a paid e-ticket number, which a reservation does not have.

What if I plan to leave overland, by bus?

Some officers accept bus tickets or an explanation, others do not. An air reservation is the format check-in agents recognise fastest.

How far ahead should I order?

About a day before you fly for a standard reservation. Airlines release unpaid bookings after roughly 48 to 72 hours, so ordering weeks ahead does not help.
