Proof of onward travel for Thailand

What is usually required

Thailand's entry rules, including visa exemption periods and eligible nationalities, have changed several times in recent years and may change again. Travellers entering for tourism are generally expected to be able to show:

• a passport valid for the period required by Thai rules;
• proof of onward or return travel out of Thailand within the permitted stay;
• details of where they will stay, and in some cases evidence of sufficient funds;
• any arrival registration or visa that applies to their nationality.

Proof of onward travel may be checked by the airline at check-in, before a boarding pass is issued for a flight to Thailand, or by immigration on arrival. Airline checks are common because carriers can be responsible for passengers refused entry. Airlines usually rely on IATA Timatic; ask your airline what it will check for your nationality and route, and read the current information published by the Thai authorities or a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate.

This can be useful when your onward plans are still open and you do not want to buy a ticket you might change. Please be aware of the limits:

• It is not a ticket and has no e-ticket number. Some check-in agents ask for a ticket number for onward travel, and a reservation may not satisfy them.
• The airline holds the reservation only for a limited time, typically 24 to 72 hours, after which it is released.
• An immigration officer decides on entry based on the whole situation. We cannot predict or influence that decision, and you remain responsible for meeting the entry requirements.

If you need certainty, buy a refundable or changeable onward ticket from an airline.

Timing tips

• Standard reservation: order it roughly one day before your flight to Thailand, so it is still held at check-in and when you land.
• 7-day or 14-day plan: helpful if you are flying via other countries first, or your departure date could shift. We automatically create a new reservation whenever the previous one is released and e-mail you the new PNR. Show the most recent itinerary, since each renewal has a different booking reference.
• Choose an onward date within the stay permitted for your nationality.
• Save the PDF offline and carry a printed copy, together with your accommodation details.

What it is not

A reservation is not a flight ticket. It is unpaid, has no e-ticket number and cannot be used to board. It does not extend your permitted stay, it is not a visa, and it should not be described as a paid ticket to an airline or an officer. When you leave Thailand, you will need to buy a real ticket or other transport.

Do I need proof of onward travel to enter Thailand?

Travellers entering without a visa or on a tourist visa are generally expected to be able to show onward or return travel, and airlines may check this before boarding. Rules vary by nationality and change over time, so check current official information and ask your airline.

Will a flight reservation be accepted at check-in?

It depends on the airline and the agent. Some accept an itinerary with a booking reference, while others ask for an e-ticket number, which a reservation does not have. Ask your airline in advance.

Can I show a bus or train ticket instead?

Some travellers leave Thailand overland, but whether an airline or officer accepts that as proof of onward travel is up to them. Check with your airline before you fly.

How long is the reservation valid?

Typically 24 to 72 hours, depending on the airline. The 7-day and 14-day plans renew it automatically and e-mail you a new PNR each time.

Can I fly out of Thailand with the reservation?

No. It is not a ticket and cannot be used to board. Buy a ticket for the flight you actually take.
